taken by the lovely shayla moller.

i was just looking through some of this year's family pictures and fell upon this one. i think it's so natural and beautiful. we are happy, together, in our favorite city.

i'm so grateful for my family and the LIGHT and JOY and HAPPINESS they bring to my life. counting down the days (16) till christmas-break and 24/7 family time! woo!!

wishing you all the same--light, joy, and happiness--this holiday season.
LOVES!!

currently loving ...

first off, i'm sorry. i know i've been absent for the last ... 2 MONTHS! i do, however, have a fairly valid excuse. i got a new job! no more bore! just FUN! because of all the fun i'm having, i have less time to blog.

the NEW JOB i speak of is still with the lds church, and still on the temporal/physical facilities side. i now work in real estate, dealing with transactions on church property. this new gig includes my obtaining a real estate license. so many terms, so little a brain.

to catch you up on yours truly, i thought it most efficient to tell you what i'm

currentlyloving

- post-it notes
- the uni-ball signo dx, .28 point.
- mcdonald's diet coke. i've always loved this but just recently i re-recognized that it's the best of the best because the mcdonald's on my way to work just reopened after a remodel.
- SPITZ!
- top knots and not washing my hair.
- in the same vein (the hair vein), the wet brush, moroccan oil, and coconut oil.
- baked potatoes from great steak for lunch.
- brooklyn 99 (new season, just as funny).
- ankle boots.
- alt-j.

i'll be spending this weekend at the temple with my family. we are hitting the newly remodeled ogden temple, and brigham city. temples are great, but i'm most looking forward to eating at my favorite thing that has ever come out of ogden: SONORA GRILL

happy weekend!

checking things off.

guys! i finally did my triathlon! the goal first crossed my mind while watching my 80 year old grandpa compete in the st. george senior games. it was so inspiring to watch him, in his frail state, swim, bike, and then finally cross the finish line running. AT 80!!!

... that was in 2007.

HA! so yes, this has been on my to-do list for 7 years. and on labour day, i finally finished. 350 yards swimming, 12.5 miles biking, and a 5k. woo!

we're all so happy to be posing in our swim-wear.

here i am, waiting to start. i was mainly thinking, will everyone laugh at me if i plug my nose when i jump in?

then at the end of the bike and run. if you think i look extraordinarily happy it's cause I WAS! i felt so happy and accomplished. you know sometimes, in special moments, when you feel like you're really living life to the fullest, getting the most out of what heavenly father has given you? this was one of those moments. i'm so grateful for my healthy body, and for my recent desires to be active. for this time of my life where i've had the chance to cultivate new hobbies and talents. i'm grateful to have the opportunity to compete in these kinds of races and to live in a place that offers them, that i was born into a family of adventures/lovers of life, for good weather, for swimming pools, my blue bike, for music that pumps me up. i'm grateful for it all and i know to whom i should offer my thanks.

i did the race with a bunch of extended family, and my dad and sister. it was a blessing training and racing with them. my family has always been my biggest cheerleaders. part of my joy upon finishing was brought by seeing my dad and sister finish.

and here's the whole tri crowd. from left to right, my uncle, me, cousin kenzie (whose influence helped me to sign up, train, and actually DO the race, thanks kenz), sister paige, dad (or roy orbison?) cousin davis, and cousin maddy.

some other things i've been checking off:
- conquering a headstand
- getting a NEW JOB!!! (more information forthcoming)
- hiking "the living room"
- eating at spitz (a new salt lake city favorite)
- trying a fried oreo (A+++++)

12.16.2013

she's home! she's finally home!

which i hope explains my absence. i can't help but follow her around like a puppy, watch her every move, and laugh at every joke.

it's been good. it's been real good.

so glad to have these faces in my life. i'm also grateful for provo pink walls, griffith jones, and audrey ellsworth.

i will pick up my blogging habits again, some day. just not today. paige wants me to pick out an outfit for her. eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

the key to true joy.

last night my dad was boppin' around with a picture and an old book of poems. when my mom asked what he was doing he responded:

"i'm doing an activity with courtney."

???
this guy!

he then proceeds to tell me to "listen to this poem while looking at this picture."

between the dark and the daylight,
when the night is beginning to lower,
comes a pause in the day's occupations,
that is known as the children's hour.

i hear in the chamber above me
the patter of little feet,
the sound of a door that is opened,
and voices soft and sweet.

from my study i see in the lamplight,
descending the broad hall stair,
grave alice, with big brown eyes,
and edith with golden hair.

a whisper, and then a silence:
yet i know by their merry eyes
they are plotting and planning together
to take me by surprise.

a sudden rush from the stairway,
a sudden raid from the hall!
by three doors left unguarded
they enter my castle wall!

they climb up into my turret
o'er the arms and back of my chair;
if i try to escape, they surround me;
they seem to be everywhere.

they almost devour me with kisses,
their arms about me entwine,
till i think of the bishop of bingen
in his mouse-tower on the rhine!

do you think, o blue-eyed banditti,
because you have scaled the wall,
such an old mustache as i am
is not a match for you all!

i have you fast in my fortress,
and will not let you depart,
but put you down into the dungeon
in the round-tower of my heart.

and there will i keep you forever,
yes, forever and a day,
till the walls shall crumble to ruin,
and moulder in dust away!

- henry wadsworth longfellow

after the "activity" my grandma mentioned she wished it was like that always. my dad said "it is! in our memories." which in turn brought to my mind this quote from jesus the christ:

an important element in this splendid elucidation of the truly blessed state is the implied distinction between pleasure and happiness. mere pleasure is at best but fleeting; happiness is abiding, for in the recollection thereof is joy renewed. true happiness is lived over and over again in memory, always with a renewal of the original good; a moment of unholy pleasure may leave a barbed sting, which, like a thorn in the flesh, is an ever-present source of anguish. happiness is not akin with levity, nor is it one with light-minded mirth. It springs from the deeper fountains of the soul, and is not infrequently accompanied by tears. have you never been so happy that you have had to weep? i have.

10 days in the sun.

woo! it has been quite the adjustment going back to the whole working thing after my vacation. i think i could probably stand living in st george; a thought that wondered through my mind a couple of times during my stay. although it was quite the scorcher >>>

with a pool and working air conditioner, i'd live. here are a few pictures from my days in utah's paradise (imo):

^^^ this was my monday. i worked hard to save up a week's worth of vacation, and this is exactly how i pictured using it.^^^

^^^ we went to vegas on tuesday, after a lovely brunch at the egg & i. paige and i usually have to talk our parents into driving down there just to go shopping. this time my tactic was to find exciting things to do and those activities would do the convincing. i found a neon sign museum online that seemed just our cup of tea ... but i couldn't figure out if you needed an appointment. then i found a lion habitat at the mgm ... but found out that it has since closed (only after walking from caesar's to mgm in the 115 degree weather). instead we ate at cheesecake factory, did a little shopping, walked to the mgm, stopped at the coca cola and m&m factories on the way. we picked up some personalized m&ms to send to paige. as you can see from the picture, it was a blast!^^^

^^^ here's a glimpse of the swimsuit that took me ages to find! and my book ... yes, i'm still reading the same book i was reading in november. but hey! at least i was reading it on my vacation (if only for like 10 minutes).^^^

^^^ for the fourth we woke up, caught the last half of the st george parade and got breakfast in the park. we tired of that pretty quickly and stopped at swig before heading to the lone ranger. then we swam and lounged, ate at texas roadhouse, and ended the day with card games and fireworks. just what i always wanted in a holiday. oh, and i bought this festive shirt.^^^

^^^ we went on a few hikes during our stay. first to red cliffs; i've heard this is a great hike ... but not in the middle of summer. all but two small, allege/creature infested pools had dried up. best to see it in early spring, now i know. second was this ^^^ falling man petroglyphs near mesquite. what a bizarre area this was. on the twenty mile stretch from the exit on i-15 we saw (mind you, in the middle of the desert): a white pyramid atop a mountain, a deserted (it seemed) oasis-like resort, a little house, and a dam with some stairs up to the top. huh? yeah, it was fun.^^^

^^^ another hike we attempted, were the lava caves in snow canyon. it's like a refrigerator in there!^^^

^^^ the last night we were there i just wanted to soak in all the goodness. we ate at cafe rio and somehow i managed to down a whole burrito. eating outside on the patio was just perfect and the light was just gorgeous! after dinner we watched the sunset on the red hill (and on our trip). i just love these two ^^^ sometimes i feel silly going on trips with them at 25, all by my lonesome. do 25 year olds do that? but that feeling lasts a split second cause they are the most fun, adventurous, nicest, lovingest, bestest travel companions and parents i could ever ask for.^^^

^^^ on the drive home i realized (thanks to my timehop app) that was the day, 4 years ago, that i got my mission call! what a great day!^^^

^^^ and here's a selfie for the road.^^^

happy weekend!

6.14.2012

27 years today.

a happy anniversary to these two love birds.

one of my favorite quotes on marriage and family comes from the family: a proclamation to the world:
husband and wife have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children. "children are an heritage of the lord". parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, and to teach then to love and serve one another, observe the commandments of god, and be law-abiding citizens wherever they live. husbands and wives - mothers and fathers - will be held accountable before god for the discharge of these obligations
the family is ordained of god. marriage between man and woman is essential to his eternal plan. children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity. happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the lord jesus christ. successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities.
i'm grateful i was raised in a home where my parents loved each other and showed it; where the principles of the gospel were lived and taught.

thanks for getting married.

hbdad.

dada

that guy, he's my dad.

one of my favorite memories was about 6 years ago in an albertson's parking lot. i was wild/crazy that night and was running as fast as i could then jumping up on the cart and riding it around. when we got to the car my dad smiled at me and said, "courtney, you're a girl after my own heart, just like david was after the lord's heart."
i loved that moment.

happy birthday to my dada who knows me perfectly and loves me perfectly.

2.24.2012

lava hot springs, usa.

last weekend was our annual over-nighter to lava hot springs, idaho.

this is a wightman family tradition, never to be broken.
lemme explain:

1. lava hot springs, population: 700.
2. 30 motels, 1 sketchy hole in the wall place to get breakfast, 1 pizza joint, 3 bars, 1 convenient store.
3. i don't think there is even one stop sign in town.
4. everyone just walks around in their robes.
5. notice that i'm wearing a robe and towel turban in the photo above? it was 20 degrees.

it is just the perffffffffffffff place.
see some of paige's writings on it here and here.

2.19.2012

smogville usa.

also known as salt lake city, utah from january to april.

to avoid this we often get outta town during march. two weekends ago it was st geezy and next weekend is lava hot springs.

we're pretty excited.

1.26.2012

i come from a long line of movie lovers.

{new york movie, edward hopper}

the funeral services for my dear grandmother were yesterday. i learned quite a bit from the people that spoke: {1}that she was a perfect example of praying with faith. {2}that my uncle lynn aspired to being a hobo. {3}that she was the homemaker for her family from the time she was 15 on. {4}being married at 17 and giving birth to 11 kids didn't dampen her spirits and she was grateful for every day. no complaints.

but probably the most important thing i learned is that i come from a long line of movie lovers. apparently she frequented every movie that came to hollywood, florida in the 30s.

and there you see it folks, it's in my blood!

{speaking of movies, i'm going to sundance tonight to see/participate in joseph gordon levitts' symposium. rumor has it that miss deschanel is performing. just sayin.}

1.23.2012

a tribute.

my sister is better than me at many things {dancing, reading, joke telling, just to name a few}. she is especially talented when it comes to tributes. see her's to my grandma eleanor here
it's all true by the way; we are better because of her.

1.21.2012

grandma eleanor.

i'm happy to announce the reuniting of my grandpa jack to my grandma eleanor this morning at 6:00am.

"and now if christ had not come into the world, speaking of things to come as though they had already come, there could have been no redemption. and if christ had not risen from the dead, or have broken the bands of death that the grave should have no victory, and that death should have no sting, there could have been no resurrection.

but there is a resurrection, therefore the grave hath no victory, and the sting of death is swallowed up in christ

he is the light and the life of the world; yea, a light that is endless, that can never be darkened; yea, and also a life which is endless, that there can be no more death."

mosiah 16:6-9

glad to have this knowledge today.

12.21.2011

apologies.

i'm terribly sorry i have ignored my blog recently. i've been busy busy busy, stressed stressed stressed. so stressed in fact, that a few nights ago i woke up in the middle of the night absolutely terrified for no apparent reason. really, racing heart rate, heavy panting, wide eyed; it sounds quite serious.

so i decided to take a lil break from:
a} this blog
b} my apartment
c} christmas shopping
d} christmas crafts
e} the gym, oops
f} everyone

i'm spending my time working {unfortunately, i could not take a break from this}, eating, and watching home alone with my favorite people.

11.23.2011

thanksgiving is upon us.

tonight, the night before thanksgiving, is one of the best nights of the year {perhaps THE best}. all my life, this night has been filled with jingle listening, bread drying, crust fluting, pie cooking, egg whipping, and pumpkin smelling. a time just before the hustle and bustle of the season for just the 4 of us to prepare for thanksgiving feasting. oh, just thinking about it makes me a little teary. i'm excited! probably because for the last two years i was street walking, guest greeting, book sharing, and family less.

last year on thanksgiving i woke up at 6:30am, studied my scriptures for two hours, then set out to deliver the turkey treats we had made the night before. one to a less active member in chevy chase, one to our member friends the menzels, one to sammy our investigator who worked at the apartment building on mass ave, and one to our homeless investigator at 18th and e. we also shared some with the sisters who fed us thanksgiving brunch. we had mulled cider and a "harvest crepe stack" {as they called it}, turkey shaped rolls, sausage stuffing, and pumpkin crepes with maple syrup and cream cheese spread. we ate again when we got to the visitors' center for our shift. this time we ate all the traditional fixins made with love by the senior couples. my parents had sent me homemade thanksgiving costumes, so we played around with those for a while. after that meal it was back to work, greeting the crowds of people who came to the temple to celebrate their thanskgiving night. it was so wonderful to kick off the season on temple grounds with 500,000 christmas lights and the christus watching over us. oh that spirit!

each year, i make a list of the many things i have to be grateful for. it's the perfect time to reflect and acknowledge what you've been blessed with. this year i am especially grateful for my family. for each and every thing that they are. for their love and support. and right now, i'm so grateful that i will be able to spend the holiday season side by side, with them!

in addition, i'm thankful for:
  • salt lake city
  • church employment
  • my misson
  • friends
  • knowledge
  • ikea pillows
  • starbucks hot cocoa
  • sleepy time tea
  • yoga {especially when its with annie!}
  • speaking of annie, GOOD FOOD!
  • sufjan stevens
  • technology {aka, my ipod}
  • my scriptures
  • my savior and redeemer, jesus christ
  • prophets
  • creative minds
  • j crew
  • cute little scions
  • cute little {actually it's huge} city apartments

"therefore, let us glory, yea, we will glory in the lord; yea, we will rejoice, for our joy is full; yea, we will praise our god forever. behold, who can glory too much in the lord? yea, who can say too much of his great power, and of his mercy, and of his long-suffering towards the children of men? behold, i say unto you, i cannot say the smallest part which i feel."
alma 26:16

i hope you have a spectacular thanksgiving filled with gratitude and pie.

{last of the} favored fall facets by linda.

{auntie/second mother/good at everything/lover of children, grandchildren, and nieces/just SO nice}

i love halloween, changing leaves, crunching leaves, crisp air and blue, sunny skies, crisp air and clear diamond skies, intensely beautifully colored flowers {they seem to pop more in the fall-maybe because you know they won't be around very much longer}, wearing sweaters-cute sweaters. is that 5 or maybe more?
