to do texas.

i just got back from a full week in texas. boy oh boy was it fun. lemme tell you how it's done:

1. make sure you document your trip using snapchat. everyone loves being bombarded by pixalated photos you can only see for 10 seconds.

2. as soon as you land, get picked up by someone as cute as this. it'll pull the 7am flight sleepies right outta ya.

3. you can jump on the tramp when you get to the house, but make sure you change out of your long underwear first. otherwise that texas humidity and heat will ... almost kill you.

4. eat a really great sunday meal (read roast with carrots and potatoes).

5. make sure you're getting your gym time in EVEN ON VACATION! it helps when your yoga instructor has a texan drawl, talks about coconut vodka for half the class, and says things like "can i get an amen!"

6. eat donuts for breakfast.

7. when your third musketeer to gets home from school, head downtown for some fun at the perot museum.

8. number eight, fittingly, is eat at hard eight bbq. this is hard core, real life barbecue. not for sissies. the kind where you eat your brisket right out of the pit, on a tray with a roll of paper towels next to you. oh, and obvi! take pictures while you're waiting for your food.

9. get a good night's rest cause in the morning you're goin' to the stockyards! yeehaw!

10. eat at potbelly's cause you can't get that freaking delicious dream bar in utah.

11. spend the day playing, and when you get home find a secret story someone wrote about you ...

12. go on a shopping spree at the j crew outlet.

12. buy everyone sunglasses then take bathroom selfies with them on.

13. eat at schlotsky's.

14. go to a ranger's game, but only after spending the day searching for the perfect, festive shirt to wear to the game.

15. get a fair amount of goodbye kisses before taking off on the next round of the trip, houston!

16. make sure you stay with the nicest family in town. if you do, you'll get offered a continuous stream of homemade cookies, pulled-pork sandwiches, kolaches, shipley's donuts, salsa, pie from dot coffee shop, jalapenos, etc, etc, etc.

17. visit galveston island. WARNING:  people will tell you that this isn't the greatest of beaches. something about seaweed and brown water. you'll be really confused when you get to stewart beach and it's one of the best beach days of your life! swimming in the gulf is WAY better than those pacific waters you're used to. spend the day getting tan, swimming in the warm ocean water, and eating chips on the shore.

18. rush home from beaching to get ready for the rehearsal dinner (did i tell you i was in texas for a wedding?). make sure you look really good because you have to GIVE A SPEECH! take a pre-dinner selfie with the bride for good measure.

19. in lieu of a traditional bachelorette party do amazonian clay masks (you might have to talk the bride into putting a foreign substance on her face the day before she says "i do").

20. early the next morning wake up, get ready, and drive to the houston temple for the big day!

21. in between the wedding and the reception, be sure to go swimming in the neighbor's pool and get a coconut lime snow cone with a shot of vanilla ice cream at sno-beach. this will add a whole lota fun to the wedding day (but seriously, a wedding day swim is now a MUST for my future wedding).

22. have a ball at the reception, chit-chat the night away, eat lemon cake, and send your newly-wedded friends off to mexico with sparklers.

23. after all that you MUST go to whataburger and round out the trip with HBCB (honey butter chicken biscuit)!

24. catch the earliest flight home :( and watch a lot of mad men during layovers.

25. once back in salt lake take a shower and sleep the rest of the day away.

thanks for all the fun lynsey josh avery joslyn sophie melanie kent audrey griff brenn nathan shelby cole and jennie!!! already praying for reasons to come again.

i've been going to a new yoga class, a HOT one. well, it's only 85 degrees and like 30 percent humidity but it's simultaneously kicking my butt and centering my chakra. i love it soso much.
bonus:  you get your first week free so come join me!

$1, di, thanks go to audrey and shelby ellsworth.

- one too many ipad games ...

- this cover
crossing my fingers i can hear it live tomorrow.

- DASK'S!
i could live there. paige and i have this joke:  after we saw mr. peabody and sherman she remarked "i wish mr. peabody was my dad", which escalated to "i wish my dad was a dog" and eventually to "i wish dask's was my dad." you know those jokes between you and your siblings? you guys think it's the funniest thing ever and everyone else doesn't get it? i love that. also i love dask's.

- wes anderson
but mostly just fantastic mr. fox.

- mad men & vampire diaries
sorry if that last one throws off your perception of me. i just can't help myself.

- eating smoothies for meals
here's my favorite:
1 cup milk
1-2 tbsp peanut butter
1 tbsp honey
1 teaspoon cocoa
a handful of ice cubes
(sometimes i throw in a banana for health's sake)

- coming up with the "ideal courtney"
she came to me in a dream the other night:  i had just ordered my meal at sarabeth's on the upper west side. i was all alone. but i was really really happy. and then i instagrammed my food.
^^^ DREAM LIFE!

- this quote:
"just let go. let go of how you thought your life should be, and embrace the life that is trying to work its way into your consciousness."

guest post // activities for fall, from audrey.

today's post comes from one of my most favoritest people, audrey. i talk about her a lot too. i have the greatest friends! audrey and i first met in a ceramics class at byu. i told her i would buy her ceramic arm with fluffy white clouds painted on it and put it in a feminist art exhibit. she didn't speak to me for the rest of the semester. luckily we got a second chance at friendship when she moved to suitland to do missionary work with me. she understands me now.

1. go on a fall picnic. people these days. ya, know? they all think picnics are for summer time. well guess what, they are dead wrong. the fall is perfect for them. to try to show to you my passion for this number one item on my list, i wrote a poem about it:

go by yourself or with friends,
grab your basket full of odds and ends,
wear some warm fall clothes,
hike to some place no one knows,
pull out your bread and butter
and that vintage thermosutter*
enjoy the crisp beautiful scene of changing colors
with yourself or with others

*thermos that rhymes with butter, not to be mistaken for a normal thermos

2. as a child, the other children and i loved baked potatoes. the mother would often ask us what we wanted for dinner. of course we would request baked potatoes year round. in the summer, my mother's response would be something like, "well baked potatoes are more of a winter food." of course children don't understand this reasoning and i'm not sure i do now. but what i do know is that i ate potatoes yesterday and i wlll probably eat them again today.

3. bike rides. what better way to get in the crisp fall air than to bike around in it? to show you my passion for this love called bikes, i wrote a rant about it:

just ride your bike. ride it in the city or in the country. ride it fast or slow. ride it, ride it, ride your bike. bike. bikes. i love bikes. bikes with baskets. bikes with gears. bikes with no gears. bikes that are colored. bikes that are black and white. bikes are winners. we are winners when we ride bikes.**

**please don't auto tune that and make it sound ridiculous, it's better if read in a monotone voice

4. well, knitted goods. or just warm clothes in general. such as this, or that, or those.

5. i have this playlist that is called wool socks and neutrals. this playlists makes so much more sense when i can actually wear wool socks and neutrals. i try in the summer, but sometimes it's no fun. so in the fall the playlist really makes a comeback and even gets a little refurbished.

from suitland to you {part 2}.

i decided to post two today because i love them so much.
this one is from my first transfer with audrey. may 2010, still in suitland, still lovin every minute:

hello.

happiness is your heritage.

we are going to the city today. hooray. we're going to georgetown, which i'm assuming is like soho, which is one of my favorite places, so i'm also assuming we're going to have a ball. we are going to anthropologie to get some ideas on how to spice up our apartment decorations. sister ellsworth is a creative genius. we are also going to georgetown cupcakes! yeah that's right. so i will let ya'll know if its better than a} magnolia cupcakes &/or b} so cupcake. needless to say, i'm excited.

let's see ... we have offically dropped everyone we were teaching. david didn't come to church on sunday so he's gone, marcus said he didn't want to meet with us anymore so he's gone, and everyone else has just weeded themselves out. less work for us. ha! it feels kind of nice to have a fresh, clean start on our hands. a "tabula rasa" if you will. we are gonna tear it up and have a baptism by the end of this transfer. the elders recently dropped everyone they were teaching and two weeks later have 3 baptismal dates ... so ... that's whats going to happen to us. i know it. this area WILL come back to life before i leave it.

we have been doing lots of finding and checking on former investigators. one that we checked on yesterday is 90 years old, his name is paul and he is already our favorite person. we knocked on the door and asked for paul and he said, "he's on the roof meditating. i'll go and get him." it was raining cats and dogs by the way. so he leaves for a few seconds and returns without the golf hat he was previously wearing. then said, "bonjour madame." ahhh! i love him. what a jokster. we are teaching him in a week. i hope he is accountable and doesn't have a bad memory or something.

yesterday was zone conference and all the sisters got rebuked by president for not having enough baptisms. he says that we're being "visiting teaching" missionaries and not commiting, bold ones. that we're being chickens. i loved it and i love president. he so good at pumping us up and now we are being really bold. and you know what that will lead to? that's right, BAPTISMS. ha ha. i'm so eager and faithful today.

so it was the airshow on base on saturday and we ate lunch with the haddad's so we could see it. loved it. i got an awful sunburn though. ouch. really bad. oh and you all know how i love the haddad's. on this particular day, they were singing a song about chicken patties:

"chicken patties on the bun,
chicken patties on the bun,
you like chicken patties on the bun?
i like patties on the bun.
we like patties on the bun.
chicken patties on the bun,
chicken patties on the bun."

just impromptu bursts of song. they are THEE best. and we've been singing that song ever since.
hey guess what? my 8th month mark was on sunday!

um .... i love sister ellsworth so much. she is marvelous. she has compared me to the following items: a} a ray of sunshine and b} the brave little toaster. ha ha. oh man. i was thinking "who does this girl remind me of?" an it has come to me ... she reminds me of paige. and that is the utmost compliment because paige is my favorite person. she delivers her jokes like you paiger and she's creative like you and i love her ... not as much as you, but still ... she's good.

let's see, i will close with a beautiful scripture i found today. i was thinking about how one can increase their faith and then i stumbled upon this:

alma 3:35
"nevertheless they did fast and pray oft and did wax stronger and stronger in their humility and firmer and firmer in the faith of christ, unto the filling their souls with joy and consolation, yea, enen to the purifying and the sanctification of their hearts, which sanctification cometh because of thei yielding their herats unto god.
as we sanctify our hearts, we can be a better instrument in the hands of the lord and we can find joy and consolation."

how beautiful. how great.
do it.

i love you. i love my mission. i love this church. i love my savior. i love maryland.
be good.

loves,
sister courtney sue wightman

favored fall facets by audrey.

{fellow suitlander/oozes creativity/a gem!/lover of hippies/future anthropologie designer/best handwriting you'll ever see}

1. cardigans are a social norm and at times, even a must
2. i think of back to school and that makes me think of gilmore girls and that makes me happy
3. beautiful leaf collages are so much easier to make in the fall
4. smells: pumpkin anything, crispness in the air, thanksgiving, byu games, and mold on fallen leaves {is that the same as crispness?}
5. i usually make new friends and develop new loves {both in hobby form and person form}

you da you da best courtie, the best i ever had.

**no audrey, YOU da best! really, she is the best.
i too associate fall with the beginning/continuation of tv series. the satisfaction of finally knowing if beckett will live, see how much baby lilly has grown over the summer {which incidentally was a year or 2}, following a race all over the world ... there is just so much joy in television!
those that infuse most joy into my life are {least loved to most loved}:

#5 glee
#2 castle

i've been wanting to check out "up all night" nbc's new show with will arnett and i've attempted to watch "the new girl" or "a show entirely devoted to the quirks of zooey deschanel" but it is so not funny.
what should i be watching that i'm not? i need to waste more time in front of the television.

9.02.2011
